Tea Ceremony Retreat: Balancing the Mind and Body Workshop

Discover the Tranquility of Japanese Tea Ceremony
In this immersive workshop, you’ll step into the serene world of Japanese tea ceremony—an art that engages all five senses. Guided by seasoned instructors trained in the Standing Tea Ceremony tradition of the Matsudaira family, descendants of Tokugawa Ieyasu, you will savor premium Japanese teas and seasonal wagashi (traditional sweets), and gain a deeper understanding of yourself through tea.

This experience is ideal for beginners curious about Japanese tea culture. You’ll taste four types of high-grade Japanese teas, including organic matcha from Nara and gyokuro. Each tea is paired with specially selected seasonal wagashi to highlight the harmony of flavors. Along the way, you’ll learn essential tea ceremony etiquette and hands-on matcha whisking techniques—so you can continue the practice at home.

The course combines the spirit of tea with practical training, placing equal importance on comprehension, sensory experience, and hands-on practice. In a relaxed and welcoming setting, participants are gently introduced to the beauty of Japanese tea.

This table-style tea ceremony does not require kneeling, making it accessible and enjoyable for everyone. It’s a perfect entry point for those who are new to Japanese tea ceremony or simply curious about matcha and wagashi.

Learn the Essence of the Way of Tea

The spirit of tea encompasses the four principles of harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility—as well as the concept of “Ichigo Ichie” (one time, one meeting). In this class, you will learn not only the spirit of tea and the art of whisking matcha but also experience the deep cultural values of Japanese tea. The instructor will guide you through whisking techniques, allowing you to enjoy a meditative tea experience in your daily life.

Taste Premium Japanese Teas and Seasonal Wagashi

You will personally taste four different types of matcha and Japanese teas such as Gyokuro and Sencha. Each tea is paired with a seasonal wagashi specially selected and brought back by the tea master from Japan. Through this elegant tasting experience, explore the depths of Japanese tea culture via your senses.

Matcha Whisking Practice & Experience

Participants will engage in hands-on matcha whisking practice in a small group setting (6–8 people), learning to craft a perfect bowl of matcha. The session is themed around Sen no Rikyū’s final tea gathering, featuring wagashi and matcha tasting. Through the tea ceremony, awaken your five senses and deepen self-awareness. Carefully prepared matcha powder becomes delicate and fine. Whisking tea is like refining the heart—an inner practice through the way of tea.
